Why We Start With Epoxy

Every floor we install is built the same way: a moisture-vapor barrier on bare slab, an epoxy base coat, and a polyaspartic topcoat, over three days. Here is what each layer does and why the order does not move.

Epoxy and polyaspartic each do something the other cannot. Epoxy stays liquid long enough to soak into a freshly ground slab and bond to the concrete, and it holds its working time while we spread flake across a whole floor. Polyaspartic cures hard and fast, and it shrugs off sunlight without fading or chalking, which is what a topcoat has to do.

So we use both, in that order, and give each one the time it needs. Here is what that time buys.

We time the topcoat to the base coat

The polyaspartic topcoat goes down while the epoxy underneath is firm but still curing. In that window the two layers bond chemically and cure as one system, not two separate films. Timing it is much of why we take three days.

Epoxy gives us time to do the flake right

Epoxy stays workable long enough to roll the base out evenly and spread flake across the whole floor before it starts to set. Even coverage really comes down to how much working time you have, and epoxy gives us plenty of it.

It soaks in before it sets

Grinding opens up the surface of the slab so a coating has something to grip. Epoxy stays liquid long enough to sink down into that texture and lock in, rather than sitting on top of it.

Moisture gets a chance to show itself

Slab moisture is the most common reason floors fail around here. Because the moisture-vapor barrier goes down first and gets time before anything covers it, a problem shows up while the floor is still one layer and easy to put right.

More of the budget goes into prep

Epoxy costs less per gallon than the polyaspartic that goes over it. That leaves more room in the same quote for grinding and prep, which is the part that decides how long a floor lasts.

It is easier to live with over time

Epoxy takes a spot repair or a fresh topcoat without much fuss. That matters years down the road, when a corner gets gouged or you simply want the gloss back.

What the Three Days Look Like

Each day sets up the one after it, which is why the order stays fixed.

Day 1

Grind and Seal

We grind the slab back to bare concrete, patch what needs patching, and lay the moisture-vapor barrier straight onto it. The barrier goes first because it is the only layer that can stop ground moisture, and nothing above it will hold while moisture is still moving.

Day 2

Base Coat and Flake

The epoxy base coat goes over the barrier, and flake gets broadcast into it while it is still wet. Epoxy is what makes that possible: it stays workable long enough to spread flake evenly across the whole floor instead of setting up under the roller.

Day 3

Scrape, Vacuum, Topcoat

We scrape the floor to pull off loose flake and even out the texture, vacuum it clean, then put the polyaspartic down. It goes on while the epoxy underneath is firm but still curing, so the two bond into one system rather than two separate films.

That is the build on every coated floor we install. The one service that skips it is concrete polishing, where there is no coating at all. Nothing goes on the slab, so nothing can come off it.
